Happy 11th birthday to the Bitcoin logo: the story behind the iconic symbol

Bitcoin-Logo Happy 11th Birthday to the Bitcoin Logo: The Story Behind the Iconic Symbol11 years ago, the Bitcoin community was given a gift on a gold platter. Well, not gold but on an orange plate and was happily embraced by the small community of the time.

Give up gold, orange is the way

After introducing the Bitcoin network to the world, the next obvious task for Satoshi Nakamoto was designing a logo that would be the face of his new creation. His first attempt at a Bitcoin logo was engraving the initials BC on a gold coin. A year later, suggestions were made on the bitcointalk forum to change the logo to resemble the Thai Baht currency symbol (฿). This was met with some criticism as Bitcoin had to share a symbol with an already existing currency.

By modeling the logo on the Thai baht, a new symbol was created, but some users felt it was too boring and hoped something better would come along. “We should just let it evolve organically, like a word in a natural language, and not worry too much about it at this early stage,” said one user.

So the community was stuck with that logo until an account with the Bitboy moniker arrived in November 2010. He said: “Hi guys, I was passing by to say hello and to share with you some of the graphics I made, feel free to download them. ".

Its design featured the B symbol drawn by Satoshi, but was done in white on a bright orange circle. The B was tilted to the right and once posted in the forum became an instant hit. "Beautiful! Best Bitcoin logo I've seen so far, ”said one user while another said,“ Wow that's great, great job man ”. The Bitboy logo has since gone viral, becoming one of the most instantly recognizable logos in the world.

The logic behind it

The transition from a gold to an orange background is quite revealing. If Bitcoin as digital gold sticks to the golden background, it could be like playing second to gold. Orange was chosen to trace its path and the new color offered aesthetic and practical value.

The Orange stood out and was easily recognizable both in print and on websites. True to its name, the orange patch has been rounded to mimic a coin and the B has been angled at an angle that could be interpreted as the advancement of technology. According to Phil Wilson, one of the first participants in the network: “The corner represents the blockchain that progresses into the future forever”.

Wilson further states that the 525% scale of the orange circle is a reference to The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy book.
