ECB: Christine Legarde is in favor of cryptocurrencies

ECB: Christine Legarde declares herself in favor of cryptocurrencies - ECB

The new governor appointed by the European Central Bank, Christine Lagarde, this morning he spoke again of digital currencies, and expressed himself in mostly positive tones.

During an audition, the Economic Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, in fact, Christine Lagarde was subjected to various questions, some of which concerned the world of digital currencies.

To this question, Legarde stated that it was quite in favor of the idea proposed by the BoE governor ie the Governor of the British Central Bank, Mark Carney, on the possibility of a digital currency issued by the central banks of the world.

During this conference, Legarde stated that: is very fascinated by this specific proposal, because it would allow central banks to form a company and explore the creation of a common digital currency.

The idea would be to create, practically, a stablecoin, similar to that of Libra of Facebook, but instead issued by the various Central Banks operating in Europe.

To this consideration, Legarde wanted to add that it is necessary, always, distinguish between bitcoins, or volatile and speculative tools, and the stablecoin that surely can have a different destiny and a different future, compared to the first ones.

Also however, the stablecoins will have to be subject to regulations that already exist and also to new ad hoc rules. Because only in this way it will be possible to avoid financing to terrorist associations, money laundering, and finally to a possible financial instability.

The words that Legarde released today, it is confirmed again interested in these new technological systems, in digital currencies and in particular it concerns especially the stablecoin, it is not favorable instead to other volatile digital currencies such as Bitcoins.

Although today it seems favorable, Lagarde had expressed a non-contrary opinion also in the field of volatile and decentralized cryptocurrencies, but they are probably outside the scope of the European Central Bank, perhaps for this reason its judgment on these has become more "Thorny"

In any case, what has been done today seems a step towards the study and the real possibility of creating a digital currency managed by the Central Banks, based on technologies similar to those that had been proposed by Facebook Libra.

At the moment, Lagarde, he is not yet the governor of the ECB, but will take over from Mario Draghi starting from November, once a mandate has expired.
